The removal of one trophic level can offset an entire ecosystem by reducing food sources or creating overpopulation. For example, by removing 2nd level consumers there will be a significant increase in primary consumers who now have to compete with one another at a more competitive level since there is a lot more consumers and a stagnant amount of producers.
