The Union also had an industrial economy, where- as the Confederacy had an economy based on agriculture. The Union had most of the natural resources, like coal, iron, and gold, and also a well-developed rail system.

DISADVANTAGES-Had to work hard to keep the loyalty of the border states. Fought on very unfamiliar land. Many urbanites were not familiar with weapons, and living off the land. Goal: They had to take over the South.
