We use numbers to represent the relationship in a situation. The numbers represent the amount of each element in the relationship. Letters are called variables. They take the place of elements that we do not know the amounts of. For example, if you have two apples and a certain amount of oranges, and you want to know how many fruit you have total, you can do 2 + x.
