Why was religion so important to Indian culture?

Answer:

For many people that is theistic belief. So religion is necessary. In that India is a special case, for us, our beliefs are intertwined with our way of life - our culture, clothing, celebrations/festivals, food, history, morals and more. Thus in India, you don't mess with religion.
