The commander in chief of the state militia and state law enforcement agencies is usually the governor of the state, unless the militia is called into the service of the United States. The governor has the authority to call out the militia to enforce the laws, suppress insurrection, or repel invasion. The governor also appoints the officers of the militia and oversees the organization, equipment, and discipline of the militia in accordance with federal law.
