Jayson went to Six Flags Over Texas for his birthday. Upon entering the theme park, he was handed a map to show where the rides were. The legend on the map stated that 0.5 inches on the map represents 2.5 actual feet in the park. Based on this information, how many inches would be on the map to represent 6 actual feet in the theme park? Six feet would be represented by inches on the map.

Six feets would be represented by 1.2 inches on the map.

Using the parameters given for our Calculation;

  • Scale on Map = 0.5 inches (map) : 2.5 feets (actual)

We can create a proportional expression thus ;

0.5 = 2.5

x = 6

cross multiply

2.5x = 6 × 0.5

2.5x = 3

x = 1.2

Hence, 6 feets would be represented by 1.2 inches on the map.
