The thalamus is the part of the forebrain that acts primarily to receive and pass on sensory information. It is a collection of nuclei that relay information between the cerebral cortex and other parts of the central nervous system. Almost all sensory information, except for the sense of smell, passes through the thalamus before being processed by the cortex.
