Why were animals such as dragons, lions, eagles and dogs used in heraldry, not animals such as butterflies or ladybugs?

Answer:

Dragons, lions and eagles are used in heraldy ( coat of arms) because they signify supremacy and also stand for nobility. Lions and eagles portray leadership and majestic potential as the lion as the king of beasts and the eagle is the king of birds. They are also considered as powerful symbols.
