A heat sink is a critical part of a computer system because it absorbs heat generated from power intensive activities and transfers that heat away from the component. Removing heat away from a computer system is important because heat can greatly hinder computational performance or even possibly create physical hazards which can be costly and dangerous such as fires, combustion, or meltdown.
