For this problem, you kinda want to work backward. So we would start with Jason being 16. So our equation would have 16 on one side.

16 = ...

Then we see his age is 1/2 of the difference of his mom's age and 6.

So 16 = 1/2(x-6)

Now we solve!

16 = 1/2(x-6)

32 = x-6

x = 38 years old
