For H2O, the hydrogen has an oxidation state of +1 and oxygen has an oxidation state of -2. Overall, for one molecule of water, H2O→ for H, 2 x (+1) = 2; for O, 1 x (-2) = -2; overall, (+2) + (-2) = 0, giving water a net oxidation state of zero.
