let x = length of a side

Area = x·x = x²

Estimated area = (8.5)² = 72.25 in²

Actual area = (8.3)² = 68.89 in²

percent error = (actual area - estimated area) / (estimated area) x 100

% error = (68.89 - 72.25) / (68.89) x 100 = -4.88% the negative sign means the estimate was higher than the actual.
