Why does the amount of energy in an ecosystem decrease from one topic level to the next?

The reason that the amount of energy decreases is because of the work that goes into it . When an animal like cow eats grass it uses energy to digest it and that releases in heat . So when we eat cows there is less energy within the food . Hope that helps .
