3. Nationalism and the rise of Italy, Germany, and Japan
The nineteenth century saw a set of new and reformulated states, built according to what people considered to be the spirit of linguistic, historical, and regional national ideals. The unification of Italy and Germany in the 1860s and 1870s and the transition from the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Meiji Restoration in Japan after 1868 were emblematic of this new nationalist turn in global politics. However, although nationalism had started out as a liberal, democratic exercise, conservative actors increasingly sought to use the symbol of the nation to protect conservative values.
