Counts are a way for musicians to understand the beats in correlation to the 4/4 statuate. Basically, in a 4/4 piece, the count is 1 , 2 , 3 , 4, 1 , 2 , 3, 4. In a 3/4 piece, it would be 1 , 2 , 3 , 1 , 2 , 3.

When counting eighth notes, (in 4/4) your count would be one and two and three and four and one... etc etc. When counting sixteenth notes, you would count that as one e and a two e and a three e and a four e.
