Rain is the first step in the transfer of carbon from the atmosphere to the lithosphere (rocks). Carbonic acid, a weak acid created when atmospheric carbon and water interact, is released into the atmosphere as rain. In a process known as chemical weathering, the acid dissolves rocks and releases calcium, magnesium, potassium, or sodium ions.
