Sometimes in the past, planets have been mistaken for stars. Why do you think this is?

Answer:

This is because the planets are much closer, inside our solar system. Although the planets are much smaller than the stars, planets appear to be about the same size as the stars because they are so close to us.

Seeing this most-likely caused confusion as well, as knowledge on the topic was not as much as it is today. We now know that planets appear to be around the same size as stars, in the past they may not have.
