What was one negative side effect of the transcontinental railroad?

I am assuming this is for US History. One negative side effect is that it led to the creation of first monopolies in America. For example, Cornelius Vanderbilt built up one of the largest railroad companies through harsh business practices such as blocking bridges he owned from other railcars.
