The citizens of Athens observed a type of democracy called direct democracy. This means that all the citizens got to vote and make decisions directly, without representatives or politicians making decisions for them. In this system, all citizens had equal say in how their city was run, and they got to vote on everything from new laws to which people would be chosen for important government jobs. It was a pretty unique system at the time and it allowed a lot of people to have a say in their government, but it wasn't perfect - only men who were born in Athens and owned property were considered citizens, so a lot of people weren't able to participate in the decision-making process.
