The three fault types are normal, reverse, and transcurrent (Strike-Slip).

  • When the hanging wall collapses, common defects

appear. Pulling the sides apart, also known as extensional forces, is what causes normal defects.

  • The rising hanging wall causes reverse defects to emerge. Compressive pressures are what push the sides together to form reversal faults.

  • Walls in strike-slip or transcurrent faults slide laterally rather than vertically.
