According to historian Kenneth M. Wheeler, the primary causes of the war were mainly economic, particularly the mercantilist system of the British and French Empires. He also argued that the American Revolution was largely a reaction to British attempts to prevent colonial trade, as well as to their interference with self-government in the colonies. Additionally, he argued that the Revolution reflected the development of an American identity distinct from that of Britain.
