Many of our attitudes, values, and beliefs about the world and the people in it are affected by our emotions; without emotions, these attitudes, values, and beliefs would just be meaningless assertions; nevertheless, emotions give those words meaning. Serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters, are employed as chemical messengers to carry messages across the network. When brain areas get these signals, we recognize things and circumstances, give them emotional values to direct our behavior, and make split-second risk/reward judgments.
