The hopes and expectations of the common Jewish people in Jesus' time were largely focused on a promised messiah who would bring about a new age of peace and justice. They believed that this messiah would overthrow the oppressive Roman rule and restore Israel to its former glory. Common Jews also had spiritual hopes for the coming messiah, believing that he would bring salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life.
