ANSWER -
African Americans in the mid-1800s faced harsh working and living conditions as slaves. They were controlled through strict laws and physical punishment, but still found ways to resist and form strong families and communities. Their leisure time was limited, but they found solace in their faith through slave churches. Despite their oppression, they maintained their African American culture and identity.
