Answer: In scholarly literature, the emergence of modern territoriality has mostly been subsumed within accounts of the origins of the modern state and the state system in Europe. On the one hand this means there are relatively few explicit explanations of why modern territories are very clearly specified by linear borders.

Explanation: In 1648, territoriality was enshrined in the modern world through two treaties called the Peace of Westphalia.
