the area of a triangle is

baseline × height / 2

we have a height of ABC down in the graph : AD = 12.

the baseline for that height is

BC = BD + DC = 5 + 9 = 14

so, the area is

14 × 12 / 2 = 14 × 6 = 84 square units.
