It's a 30-60-90 triangle. Those are angle measurements. See the attached image.

The way I remember it is by looking at the side opposite the 60° angle as being multiplied by
√(3), and the one opposite to the 30° being the normal side length.


x√(3) = unknown side in that case.

Use the Pythagorean theorem.


x^2+(x√(3))^2 =(√(8))^2\\ x^2+3x^2=8\\4x^2=8\\x^2=2\\x=√(2), x=-√(2) \\

No negative side lengths.
