Answer: an environment is stable when the lapse rate is less than the moist adiabatic rate.

Explanation: So this would mean that when an environment has stable conditions in the atmosphere, that environment doesn't have crazy weather all the time, such as snow one day and the next 100 degree sunny weather if that makes sense. this worked for an answer for me for geography so i hope it works for you too!
