Explanation:

The greater the absolute value of a negative number, the lesser (farther left from zero) it is. The greater the absolute value of a positive number, the greater (farther right from zero) it is.

Thus,

-6 < -2 < 0 < 4 < 8

and

-5.5 < -5.2 < -5 < -2.5 < 5.5

Notice also how it is easier to compare numbers when they are converted to the same form—in this case decimal form.
