POLITICAL PARTIES
George Washington was the first President of the United States and served from 1789 to 1797. During his time in office, he was concerned about the potential negative effects of political parties on the unity and stability of the new nation.
In his Farewell Address, Washington warned against the dangers of "faction," which he saw as arising from the formation of political parties based on "geographical discriminations, or any other circumstance." He argued that such parties could lead to "the alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism."
Washington argued that it was important for the nation to maintain unity and avoid the pitfalls of factionalism in order to achieve its goals and preserve its democratic system. He called on citizens to put the good of the nation above their own individual or group interests.
