The Lottery by Shirley Jackson can teach us about the dangers of blind conformity and obedience without question in our own society. Through the lottery, Jackson demonstrates how an outdated tradition of killing can become entrenched in a society due to years of stagnation and conforming to the blind logic of the elders. This can be seen today in the blind loyalty to certain political leaders or the adherence to outmoded values and ideologies without question. The lesson to be learned is that society must remain open to reexamining its values and traditions in order to prevent stagnation and maintain a healthy and vibrant society. We do have our own ’lotteries’ in the form of questionable decision-making, influencers that can push agendas of their own, as well as rules that are rarely examined, but are instead blindly accepted by their constituents.
