The start of the Sepoy Rebellion is traditionally seen as the incident at the cantonment of Barrackpore in 1824, when a soldier of the 34th Bengal Native Regiment refused to use the new rifle cartridges, which were said to be greased with fat derived from both cows and pigs, which insulted the religious beliefs of both Hindus and Muslims.
