It represented the end of the war between the North and South. It was between the Confederate forces under the command of Joseph E. Johnston against the Union forces of William Tecumseh Sherman that was fought in Bentonville North Carolina from March 9 to 22, 1865. After series of attacks and defense, Johnston retreated and later surrendered. General Robert E. Lee surrendered earlier in April bringing the war to a close.
