Why did the United States Senate ultimately reject the peace treaty and the League of Nations?

Because the US Senate did not want to follow Article X of the League of Nations, which stated that if a nation (call it nation 1) within the league faced aggression from another nation outside the league (nation 2), the other nations within the league are obligated to defend nation 1. Which faced huge resistance within the senate due to the US having no desire to join in another war.
