It was from the Louisiana Purchase. It limited the practice of slavery in the western territories. This maintained the balance between free states and slave states. However it was repealed by the Kansas –Nebraska Act that allowed slaves in those areas by deciding for themselves. This led to the creation of the Republican Party.
