The correct answer is nucleic acid.

The DNA present in an organism is made up of nucleic acid. This nucleic acid is the polymer that carries traits from one generation to another generation.

The nucleic acid has its functional unit gene. The genes responsible for a particular trait (character such as hair type, eye color, blood group)which is carried from parents to the children.

Hence, a child has character of both the parents.
