Improper fractions have a numerator that is greater than the denominator. Mixed fractions always have the numerator smaller than the denominator, and there may be a number in front of the fraction.
For example,
(3)/(2) is an improper fraction, as 3>2
You can convert it into a mixed number by changing it into
1 (1)/(2).
Both improper fractions and mixed numbers represent the same value, but in different forms.

Improper fractions can be changed into mixed numbers and mixed numbers can be changed into improper fractions (that's how the are similar) they are different because mixed numbers have a whole number
