It means that you are out of your safety zone. You are doing something that may make you nervous or cautious more than usual.

I think it means you're like out of your natural habitat.
Like you're for example a book nerd (that's me!) and you go to this advanced technology conference, wouldn't you feel like you weren't in the right place?
