Given:
Blue lake trail 11 3/8 miles long
Gemma hiked 2 1/2 miles per hour
Gemma hiked for 3 hours

Find how far she is from the end of the trail.

We need to convert these mixed fractions into improper fractions. Improper fractions are fractions that have numerators that are bigger than their denominators.

11 3/8 ⇒ ((11*8)+3)/8 = 91/8
2 1/2 ⇒ ((2*2)+1)/2 = 5/2

3 hours of hiking.
5/2 * 3 hours = 5*3/2 = 15/2

91/8 - 15/2 : the distance from end of the trail

Subtracting fractions must have the same denominator.

91/8 - 15/2 *4/4 = 91/8 - 60/8
(91-60)/8 = 31/8
31/8 = 3 7/8 miles

Gemma is 3 7/8 miles away from the end of the trail.
