Did Washington believe people could successfully be persuaded to join the continental army simply by appealing to their feelings of patriotism?

No cause people could not be in the army by appealing to their feeling unless they just didnt have that much people in the army i understand but people can not be in the army by appealin to their feeling of patriotism.
