Joseph Stalin wanted to convert the peasant society of the Soviet Union into an industrial superpower. He wanted the country's economy to be ruled by the government. One way of controlling the economy was to subject private farms under government rules by way of forced collectivization of the Soviet agriculture. He ruled with terror. Those who opposed his views and orders were killed.

It was said that during his reign, 20 million people died under his orders.
