The Spanish-American War began due to the annexation of Texas to the United States and border raids support by Mexican government. The war began when American soldiers commanded by General Zachary Taylor along the Rio Grande. The United States won the war through superior forces and artillery. Among significant victories won by the Americans were the Battle of Buena Vista, Vera Cruz and the siege of Chatulpectec Castle. On February 2, 1848, the Treaty of Hidalgo was signed ending the war. The U.S. gained more territories from Mexico such as California and other territories north of the Rio Grande for $15 million.
