Photosynthesis synthesized glucose from carbon dioxide and water with the help of sunlight and chlorophyll. Oxygen is released as the byproduct.

6CO₂ + 6H₂O solar energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Cellular respiration uses this glucose in order to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell. The cell releases carbon dioxide and water as the byproducts after complete oxidation of glucose.

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O energy (ATP)
