What is one reason that workers joined together to form unions in the late 1800s?

One of the main reasons why workers joined together to form unions in the late 1800s was that the Industrial Revolution had led to many workers being gravely exploited--both physically and financially--by their employers. Forming unions allowed for them to successfully negotiate better terms of employment.
