How many strings does a mandolin have?

Mandolin is a member of lute family. A mandolin commonly has 4 courses of doubled metal strings that are tuned in unison (total of 8 strings). There are also course versions that have 5 metal strings (total of 10 strings) and 6 metal strings (total of 12 strings).
