By the late 1800’s, political machines controlled many major U.S. cities. They helped New Immigrants find jobs or ________; they supplied coal in winter. They also helped New Immigrants become naturalized citizens, In return, the politicians expected the New Immigrants to vote for them.

I don't really know what the answer is for sure, but I would guess "homes." Political machines were seen as bad through a political lens, but they actually did some beneficial stuff for the poor. In return for immigrants' votes, they would provide jobs and other services to those in need.
