The most powerful of the Barbary states was Algiers. The U.S. Naval army lead by Stephen Decatur was able to destroy two warships from Algiers and already captured a lot of prisoners. The leader of Aljiers, Dey Omar, accepted the treaty that Decatur offered. This treaty aimed to rescue American and Algerian prisoners that are trapped Algiers. The treaty also stated that Algiers had to stop their practice of tribute and ransom. After that, Decatur traveled to the other two Barbary States, Tunis and Tripoli, and offered them the same treaty which were also accepted by both.
