What were some reasons labor unions were formed during Industrialization Revolution? Who did they try to protect

The main reason why labor unions existed during the industrial revolution was to protect and fight for worker rights. Workers at the beginning of the industrial revolution didn't have many rights; very very few actually compared to what we have today. For that reason, labor unions were necessary to ensure they would gain at least minimal rights later on.
