Because it didn't have a proper plan. It didn't have many troops and the English had a good plan

I dont know if this is what you are looking for but when America fought the Spanish Armada, the Spaniards fleet was significantly weakened due to previous conflicts, so our iron clad  ships were able to defeat them. This victory led to America joining the global scale of world powers and not just a baby country
