Volcanic ash is thick, yet able to remain in the atmosphere for longer periods of time.

The effect it has is blocking sunlight for extended period of times over extended parts of land. This in turn makes the climate colder: without the energy of the Sun, which is blocked by the ash, Earth is becoming colder: this is how volcanic ash contributes to colder weather
